Writer Wednesday: Dora Hiers…with a Giveaway!!
Welcome to my Writer Wednesday feature! Each week, I interview one fellow writer, who could be at any stage of their writing career. The aim of this feature is twofold: to showcase a fellow writer and to find out more about him/her, and hopefully to find in their answers some helpful hints to help out with your own writing! The interview questions are the same for everyone, but each interviewee gets a unique Kung Fu KAPOW! Question. Watch out for them, they're doozies!
This week will be the first time that my Writer Wednesday feature will also include…a giveaway! Yes, I've been hosting lots of giveaways lately, so why stop? Today's prize is donated by the lovely…
Dora Hiers
After a successful auditing career, Dora left the corporate world to be a stay-at-home mom to her two sons. Eventually, needing something more to fill her days, she started writing heart-racing, God-gracing books. She is a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and the Carolina Christian Writers. Her debut novel, Journey's End, is published by White Rose Publishing. Visit her at DoraHiers.com and on her Facebook page.
When did you start writing?
When my son started middle school and didn't want me hanging out at school with him anymore. LOL. By then, I'd been a stay-at-home mom about three years and had spent most of my time alternating between two schools. My older son graduated, and my younger son moved to middle school. I knew I needed something more to fill my days. An avid reader, God planted a story idea that pinged around in my head for a few months until I finally confessed my desire to write to my husband. With his enthusiastic support, I started pounding out the story.
What genres do you write?
Inspirational romantic suspense.
Sum up your current WiP in 10 words or less.
My current work in progress? That would be Journey's Embrace. Hmmm. "Can a play-it-by-the-rules guy and a risk-taking female find love?" That's ten words in Microsoft Word count. Yay! No? OK. Try this. "Can Sage protect Delaney without losing his heart?" Eight! Yowzee! But I don't like it as much as the first one. How about you?
J.C.: I like the first one better, too, and using hyphens is a great way to cheat the word count!
What's your ultimate goal as a writer?
To write heart-racing, God-gracing romance.
How close are you to achieving this goal?
Journey's End, my first book in the Marshals of Journey Creek series, released with White Rose Publishing in May 2011 in e-book and print formats. My second book in the series, Journey's Edge, is currently under consideration by White Rose. Journey's Embrace, the third and final in the series, is nearing completion.
Any quirky writing habits?
Noise bothers me. I enjoy quiet while I write. No music or distractions, just the soft snores of my golden retriever and the chattering of the birds outside my window.
Best writing snack?
Because my hubby and I are watching our weight, I usually don't keep snacks around the house. Yeah, I know. Sad, isn't it? But I always have a beverage sitting on my desk. In the summer, it's a glass of cold tea, and in winter, hot tea or hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. And, for the occasional weak moment, a mini Dove dark chocolate. Yum!
Kung Fu KAPOW! Question:
If you could no longer write, would you channel your creativity into a different artform? If so, what? If not, how would you fill that time?
I think I'd take up photography. To capture life in its essence–the joy and wonder on my grandson's face when he finally takes his first steps, the glorious hues of a sunset as the sun slips past the horizon, an approaching storm swirling with angry gray clouds. Isn't that our goal in writing? To bring words to life?
Thank you for stopping by! Dora is delighted to give away a print copy of Journey's End to one lucky commenter (US only)! Deadline for entries is midnight tonight EST. All you have to do is to leave your email address below, and to answer today's Kung Fu KAPOW! Question yourself!
If you could no longer write, would you channel your creativity into a different artform? If so, what? If not, how would you fill that time?
My answer: Seeing as I'm not the artistic type, I'd probably channel my energies into something completely different. I suppose I'd end up doing what I do now, but for the long run: a full-time martial arts instructor. With kung fu as my main focus instead of writing, I'd probably work on my personal progression more, with an aim to master the complete system and to be the first lady master in the organisation.
