Blog Awards
Sunshine Award
Yay! It's been a while since I received an award I haven't gotten previously! Isn't this one pretty? Reminds me that spring is nearly here! Thanks to Kerri Cuevas and Mina Burrows for nominating me! To accept this award, I have to answer the following questions:
Favourite colour: Pretty powder pink (I know, tough old kung fu instructor likes a girly colour!)
Favourite animal: Domestic–dog; wild–three-way tie between dolphin, fox and tiger
Favourite number: 7
Favourite non-alcoholic drink: Apple & raspberry juice; Diet Pepsi/Coke; strawberry slush puppy (for the record, non-alcoholic drinks are the only kind I drink)
Facebook or Twitter: Facebook (for the games!)
My passions: Writing, martial arts, reading, my dogs!
Getting or giving presents: Giving
Favourite pattern: Plain, i.e. no pattern; if I had to choose, multi-coloured polka dots
Favourite flower: Lilies
I'm passing on this award to the following rays of sunshine:

Liebster Blog Award
Thank you Barbara G. Tarn @ Creative Barbwire for this award! 'Liebster' is German for 'Beloved', so this award is for the best-loved blogs! To accept the award, I have to pass it on to 5 other bloggers, so here they are (for a more in-depth profile of each blogger, see here):

Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award
Thank you Elaine Stock @ Everyone's Story, Genna Sarnak @ Reading, Writing, & the World of Words, and Sierra's Writing Adventure for this sweet award! Does it look yummy or what?
Here are the (optional) rules for accepting this award.
- Thank the person who awarded you and link back to them.
- Share 7 things about yourself
- Award 5 recently discovered great bloggers, and notify them of the nomination!
Now, these are the rules for accepting both this award and the Stylish Blogger Award, which I have received previously (below). As such, I thought I'd just add 5 more blogs to award on top of the 10 I already nominated for the Stylish Blogger Award to make up the required 15. Not cheating, no?
And to make this seem less like a cheat, here are 7 new facts about myself:
- Strawberry pavlova is one of my favourite desserts! The meringue is light so it's not a heavy dessert, and the strawberries mean I'm eating my fruits for the day! Oh, and that is why I am absolutely loving this award! Just look at that massive pavlova!
- My three biggest fears: heights, needles, and–believe it or not–lizards! Ew at their scaly skin, clawed feet and bug eyes!
- I wrote a 'book' when I was 13, long hand, in a school notebook. I hated it after, so much so that when a friend said he liked it, I just gave it to him! When (or if!) I become a world-famous author, that book will be worth something!
- I call my partner the fiaby, short for fiancé-hubby, and will continue to do so during this limbo time between our marriage registration and the actual wedding ceremony!
- I am 5-and-a-half years older than the fiaby, something he never lets me forget!
- When I was 15, I was given an assignment in English to write a story beginning with the classic "It was a dark and stormy night…" I wrote a first person narrative of a cowboy trapped in a haunted ghost town–3,000 words in one-and-a-half hours. And my teacher slated the story. His main criticism: it has to be about myself if I write in first person, not some made-up cowboy! Which brings me to no. 7…
- My most hated teacher ever in school was my 11th grade English teacher.
And my 5 nominees for this award are:
- Colene Murphy @ The Journey
- Elena Solodow @ You're Write. Except when you're Rong.
- Eeleen Lee @ Unmanuscripted
- Melissa Wideen @ Through the Looking Glass
- Will Burke @ Fatherhood & Other Common Terrors
Stylish Blogger Award
Big thanks to Christopher S. Ledbetter @ The Oracle and the Muse, Ariel Eishen @ Ariel Writes, Genna Sarnak @ Reading, Writing, & the World of Words, Sierra's Writing Adventure and Murees Dupe @ Daily Drama of an Aspiring Writer for this award. Me? Stylish? I'm flattered.
To accept this award I have to:
- Thank and link back to the person who nominated you for the award (check!).
- Share 7 things about yourself.
- Pass the award on to 10 recently discovered bloggers. Contact them and let them know they have been nominated.
Here are the 7 facts about myself. I've been careful not to repeat the ones I used for another award:
- I hold a 1st Degree (black belt) in Wing Chun kung fu.
- I wrote my first novel (probably novella word count-wise) when I was 14, in long hand, but hated the final product so much that when my friend asked for it I just gave it to him!
- I am proud mom to three dogs: a Chihuahua named Alfie, a Pomeranian named Bubbles, and a cross of the two, a Pom-Chi named Boo.
- My three biggest fears are: needles, lizards and heights–go figure.
- I hold a degree in Pharmacology, and spent two years in cancer research, where I specialised in prostate cancer.
- On the same subject, I practiced injecting cancer cells into a mouse's prostate. You have no idea how difficult that is!
- I represented my university in badminton, and our greatest achievement is a team silver in the London University Championships.
And now on to the nominations. These are recently discovered bloggers that I am now stalking. Pop on over and say hi!
- Sarah Ahiers @ Falen Formulates Fiction
- Erica & Christy
- Charli Mac @ AJ & Charli Bite Back
- Christina Lee @ Write-Brained
- Elizabeth Briggs @ Liz Writes
- Tony Benson @ Fireside Park
- Margo Benson
- Ellie Garratt
- Patricia A. Timms @ Simplicity in Volumes
- Quinn @ Seeing, Dreaming…Writing
Beautiful Blogger Award
I'm really chuffed to receive this award from Quinn @ Seeing, Dreaming…Writing, as I've always adored the lovely design of this award. Plus there are BUTTERFLIES!! Who doesn't love butterflies? Well, I do know a friend who thinks they're evil, but the point is, it was a wonderful surprise after a long day at work, and a good couple of hours NaNoWriMo-ing! Thanks again, Quinn!
It seems there aren't any requirements attached to this award, except that I need to pass it on. Here are my five choices for Beautiful Bloggers:
- Summer @ …And This Time, Concentrate!
- Lydia Kang @ The World is My Oyster
- Rachael Harrie @ Rach Writes…
- Jodi Henry @ Turning the Page: A Literary Ramble
- L'Aussie Writing
Cherry on Top Award
Now I love the colour pink, I love rainbows, and I LOVE cupcakes! So you can imagine how excited I am to receive this lovely pink, rainbow-infused, cupcake-laced Cherry on Top Award from Talei Loto @ Musings of an Aspiring Scribe.
To accept this award I must answer the following question:
If I had the chance to go back and chane one thing in my life, would I, and what would it be?
I probably would have–yep, you guessed it–started writing seriously sooner: took a Creative Writing course when I was at university or something, joined a writer's circle before I started full-time work. Oddly, I've had two complete career changes in the last seven years, from scientific laboratory research to academic teaching, and now to martial arts instructing. However, I wouldn't change any of this even if I had the choice, as each of these very different jobs have given me a different insight and perspective that will probably come in handy in some WIP sooner or later! Plus I did really enjoy teaching, but alas, the call of the WIP was strong!
I'm not sure how many people I'm supposed to pass this award to, but figured five was a decent number. So here are my five cherry-topping blogs:
- Brenda Drake
- Hannah Kincade @ Musings of a Palindrome
- Rachel Morgan
- Marieke
- The Golden Eagle
THE VERSATILE BLOGGER AWARD
Thanks to Jenna Quentin @ Meandering in a Field of Words, Donna Hole and Erica & Christy for this award! I'm assuming that to accept this award, the normal rules apply:
- Thanks the person who gave you the award and link to them
- Add the award to your blog
- Nominate 15 other people to give the award to (I'm assuming it's 15 as Donna nominated 15).
- Let your nominees know you have awarded them.
Additionally, I'm required to list 7 facts about myself, so here goes:
- My favourite breed of dog is the chihuahua–that's why I have one-and-a-half of them! I don't see them as girly little handbag accessories, but little firecrackers; tiny dogs with BIG attitude!
- I am still hugely addicted to Disney animated movies, and more recently Pixar ones!
- I can probably sing 90% of said Disney movie songs.
- On the same theme, my phone's ring tone is Under the Sea.
- Although it used to be Kung Fu Fightin' until I changed my phone and somehow couldn't transfer the song over to my new phone.
- I have low-to-mediocre proficiency in the following weapons (in some cases, I've picked it up and practised it for an hour!): bo staff, butterfly knives, escrima stick, long pole, nunchucks, sai and tonfa.
- My favourite meat is duck…no, lamb…no, venison…no, beef…erm…let's rethink that. My favourite fish is monkfish…no, cod…no, salmon…gah! I like food.
And here are my 15 nominees:
- WritersBlockNZ
- Mesmerix @ Scribbler to Scribe
- J.W. Parente @ In My Write Mind
- DL Hammons @ Cruising Altitude
- Roh Morgon
- Summer Ross
- Francine @ Romancing the Blog
- S.E. Sinkhorn @ Maybe Genius
- Michele @ Southern City Mysteries
- Angela McCallister @ Jaded Love Junkie
- Emily White @ Stepping into Fantasy
- Christine Danek
- Brad Jaeger
- Damyanti @ Amlokiblogs
- Amanda Sablan @ All That Good Jazz
LESA'S BOLD FACED LIAR "CREATIVE BLOGGER" AWARD
Thank you John Smith for this award, which is a lovely surprise considering I go bankrupt when I try to play poker! But I'll give it a good go!
To be able to accept this award, one must now do the following:
- Thank the person who gave you the award and link to them.
- Add the award to your blog.
- Tell six outrageous lies about yourself and one truth.
- Nominate four creative liars–I mean writers–and post links to them.
- Let your nominees know that they have been nominated.
Have a go at picking the truth out of these lies:

This is AWESOME!!! Do I get to give a speech? … I'll take your silence as a yes.
*ahem* I'd like to thank the little people first, without whom my blog wouldn't be so pretty. Um, okay person. Thanks to Kait Nolan who helped me design my blog and made the awesomesauce banner for me. Yeah, that's all I got.
Thank you so much for this award.

You sure you won't want to accept it again? That's very generous of you! I'll pick someone else once I stumble upon another great blog!

Thanks for the award, JC. I, too, have already received the award, but I see no reason not to take it from you as well with much thanks. Have a great day. I am at work and must run, Roland

wow! Thank you! That was a great surprise!
Dawn Embers says:
August 15, 2010 at 9:50 AM
Aww. Thank you!
I kinda want the dog one to be true. It's very weird, kinda funny and a little cool if the three dogs are actually named Snap, Crackle and Pop. Though it's very unlikely.
We have two black cats we take care of because the neighbors abandoned them when they moved. I named the cats after Odin's ravens. Muninn is very affectionate, nice black fur and orangish eyes. Perfect Halloween cat.
Franklin Beaumont says:

Thank you very much for the nomination! What a nice surprise, much appreciated.
Olivia J Herrell says:
August 15, 2010 at 2:48 PM
Congratulations, JC, you deserve both of these! Well done.
Hmm, which one is the truth? You sing to your flowers, yes? Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head? I read that on someone's blog, was that your character??
I don't have this award and am excited that you would bestow it on me!
Congratulations to all the other award winners!

J.C. Martin says:
August 16, 2010 at 9:13 AM
You are welcome, well-deserved nominees!
@Dawn: You're wrong, sadly. With the dogs, I got my first with no intention of getting any more, and hence never had the foresight to name them after Rice Krispies. Their real names are Alfie, Bubbles and Boo!
@Olivia: Way off, sorry! I don't even have a green thumb, let alone plants I could sing to! Although I do sing to the dogs…
That leaves four more lies and one more truth! We're getting there, people!

Jayne says:

Thank you so much for the Award! So sorry it has taken me a while to pop over and say thanks, but I was very chuffed to recieve it – brilliant! And I like your lies.. so I am searching for one truth in there, am I? I am hedging for 2. If 2 is not a truth but a lie then I commend you for your amazing imagination – fantastic!
J.C. Martin says:
August 23, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Hey Jayne! Thanks for popping over, and you're welcome. I'm sorry to say #2 is also a lie. I do find baby marsupials pink and slimy and squirmy, but I don't have a phobia of them! In fact, pink happens to be my favourite colour!
So it just leaves #1, #4, #5 and #6. The truth is out there, people!
DL Hammons says:

Summer Ross says:

I think number 5 is the truth.
Thank you so very much for the award! I appreciate you noticing me.
J.C. Martin says:
September 21, 2010 at 2:33 PM
You are welcome, one and all!
@Summer: That one couldn't be further from the truth! I have a phobia of lizards! Snakes, tortoises and other reptiles are fine, but somehow lizards give me the heebie-jeebies!
Steph Sinkhorn says:
September 21, 2010 at 7:10 PM
Yay! Thank you so much for the award
Hmm… for your lies, I'm going to go with "I can't swim" being the lie.
Steph Sinkhorn says:
September 21, 2010 at 7:10 PM
Oh jeez, duh, I was supposed to pick the one that was the TRUTH. Hm. I change my vote to arranging your spices, then
J.C. Martin says:
September 23, 2010 at 12:16 AM
Congratulations! You're the first one to correctly guess the truth! And a rather sad one at that…my herbs and spices are alphabetised, from basil through to vanilla!
